Mount Olivet Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1888, it is one of the largest Catholic cemeteries in the city, covering an area of more than 300 acres. It is located in the southwest side of Chicago, near the suburbs of Blue Island and Evergreen Park.
The cemetery has several notable features, including a large mausoleum complex, which contains more than 8,000 crypts and niches. There is also a garden crypt area, a veterans' section, and a section for infants and children. An outdoor shrine is located near the entrance of the cemetery.
A number of famous individuals are buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, including former Chicago mayors Anton Cermak and Richard Daley, novelist Nelson Algren, and musician Sam Cooke. The cemetery also contains the final resting place of many notable members of the city's Catholic community, including clergy, religious sisters, and laity.
Mount Olivet Cemetery is open to visitors daily from dawn until dusk. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, attend mass at the outdoor shrine, or pay their respects at the gravesites of their loved ones.
